If your plant dries in two days or stays wet for two weeks, the number alone does not tell the full story. First ask what kind of plant it is, how much light it gets, how large the pot is, and whether the lower root zone is wet or dry.

Most houseplant soil should move from freshly watered to ready-for-checking over several days, but the correct interval changes by plant and room. Water when the plant's root zone needs it, not because a calendar says the week is up.

How do you check soil dry-down accurately?

Check dry-down at the root zone, not only at the surface. The top can look dry while the bottom is wet, and water can run out of a dry, shrunken root ball before the center rehydrates.

Use more than one cue. University of Maryland Extension recommends testing with a finger to about two inches for many plants and lifting the pot to compare wet and dry weight. For large pots, it recommends a stick or dowel that reaches deeper into the mix.

Soil that dries in a day or two may be normal in heat, strong light, a tiny pot, or an unglazed terracotta container. It becomes a problem when the plant wilts often, leaf edges crisp, or water runs through without rewetting the root ball.

Soil that stays wet deep in the pot for many days deserves a drainage and light check. The risk is not the surface looking damp; the risk is a lower root zone that stays waterlogged and low in oxygen.

Plant type changes how dry the mix should become before watering again. Succulents and water-storing plants usually need a deeper dry-down than ferns, peace lilies, or many thin-leaved tropical plants.

The myth is that every houseplant should dry in the same number of days. The reality is that dry-down changes with plant species, root size, pot material, potting mix, season, humidity, temperature, and light.

A one-week rule can overwater a snake plant in a cool room and underwater a thirsty fern in a small pot near heat. A better rule is to learn the plant's normal wet-to-ready pattern and investigate when the pattern changes suddenly.

Why is only the top soil dry?
