Houseplant leaf spots are frustrating because several unrelated problems can look brown, black, tan, or yellow at first glance. A stable dry scar from cold water is not managed like a spreading fungal lesion, and a plant with mites needs a different response from one with damaged roots.

University of Maryland Extension describes fungal leaf spots as lesions that may be tan, reddish brown, or black, often roughly circular, and sometimes merging into larger blighted areas. That pattern is a reason to reduce leaf wetness and improve sanitation, not permission to name a pathogen from a photograph.

Could pests cause houseplant leaf spots?

Yes. Mites and other sap-feeding pests can create stippling, pale flecks, distorted tissue, or general discoloration that people call spots. The pest may be easier to find on the underside of a leaf or at a stem joint than on the visible top surface.

Common advice fails when it treats a color instead of a cause. These mistakes can spread a problem, injure healthy leaves, or destroy the evidence needed for a better diagnosis.

  • Spraying before inspecting: the wrong product can burn leaves and hide pest or disease clues.
  • Misting as treatment: wet foliage is not the same as humid air and can extend the conditions that favor some leaf spots.
